Calvary Cross at Salperton

Carved figure of Christ, for the First World War memorial at Salperton Gloucestershire.

The original figure is now approaching 100 years old, and had unfortunately decayed beyond repair. I was commissioned to carve a copy of the original together with the construction of a new cross. The main body of the figure was carved from one piece of seasoned oak, to which the arms were added by ‘dovetailing’ them onto the body.

The original carving was a very fine piece of work, with the face in particular showing great depth of emotion. In this challenging commission, my ability as a carver was certainly put to the test. Dedicated attention was essential in order for the new figure to evoke the same emotional feeling as the original.
