The Catholic church of St Thomas More in Stockbridge Hampshire required a new crucifix for the interior of the church, in a style that would be in keeping with the architecture of this 1950’s building.
Having spent some time considering the commission, and taking into consideration the setting in which it was to be placed, simplicity I felt would be the key to the design.
In abstracting unnecessary detail, one arrives at the essence of a subject, Simple lines upon which the eyes can rest and reflect.
The pain and suffering are emphasised by the sharp piercing thorns and nails, while the contrasting uplifting lines suggest an inner beauty, a permanence through faith and the coming resurrection.
I strived to produce work that was free from the ego of an individual, so that through the form created, the universality if its inner message may lift the spirit and open the hearts of all.
