The figure was originally carved from two blocks with tail, arms etc added. The large blocks had shrunk in drying, allowing rot to take hold within the figure. The two halves were separated, machined flat, and a new piece of timber inserted to replace timber lost in the machining. The figure was then reassembled, the new timber re-carved, together with other missing details. This included a new trident. New timber was then distressed to match the patina of the original figure.
