The 110 gun HMS Howe was launched from Pembroke dockyard in 1860 with a figurehead depicting Lord Howe carved by J.E. & J. Hellyer The figurehead survives and is displayed outside the current owners house near Great Missenden in the Chiltern Hills. I was commissioned to carve a scaled down copy of the figure for a private collector.
This most intricate figure survives as one of the finest examples of the James Edward and his son James Hellyer, and was quite a challenge to replicate the fine level of detail, particularly when reduced to a smaller scale.
