The Butlers did it! This 69ft steal motor yacht was home-built from scratch by a family who plan to cruise her in the Mediterranean and offer her for charter. Jake Kavanagh reports.

"If
I had known how much it was going to cost, I would never have agreed
to it," admits Iris Butler of her family's six year project
to build a motor yacht which they could live abroad and charter
out in the Mediterranean. "But looking at her know I am glad
we did."

She
and her husband Joe constructed Merdeka from scratch and fitted
her out with imagination and skill. And, remarkably, they did
so without plans, or the benefit of formal training.......

Indeed, the standard of the wood
work and the attention to detail is remarkable. "Many boats are
quite dark down below," says Joe. "So we chose to fit her
out in almost exclusively in American White oak, which is both hard
wearing and light in colour."......

Perhaps the most eye-catching aspects of the cabin are the woodcarvings that grace the corners of each bunk. "We found a professional woodcarver called Andy Peters, who trades as Maritima, from a superb workshop near Oxford," says Colin. "He carves all day long, with his dog asleep at his feet." The attention to detail is remarkable; like the tiles they are works of art. |
